According to estimations there are between 6,000 and 30,000 children of same-sex parents living in Switzerland. Thus there seems to be a significant gap between the lived realities of these families and the current legal situation, which neither allows people living in civil union to adopt children, nor grants access to assisted reproductive technology. Using the camera as a research tool, Sonderegger will observe and portray rainbow families, which challenge and question the hetero-normative family model and live within the tensions of a non-supportive legal situation. The film will explore how a family with e.g. two mothers, a father and several grandparents comes into being, how it functions, is experienced by its members and then represented to the outside world.
