Home is a crucial part of peoples' lives: it is closely related to memory, self-identity and even expectations for the future. In Chinese culture, family responsibility often comes before individuals' self-realisation, whereas in Western society people think more highly of individual freedom and independence. Li is a Chinese student who never left China before. She is currently studying in Manchester, and she has suffered from culture shock in many ways. Especially after meeting people from different countries and listening to their stories about their home, she was surprised at the different understandings of 'home'.
This project is therefore an exploration of Mancunians' sense of home. It examines the relationships between people's Being and their understanding of home, highlighting the effects of early experiences and cultural differences. By 'home', this project focuses on people's emotional understanding rather than physical space; however, sometimes descriptions of physical space and buildings will also become helpful illustrations to portray one's emotional sense of home.
